Saint Georgios Church

The name Hagios Georgios or Agios Georgios is used as "Aya Yorgi" in our country.

It is known that St. Georgios, who is considered the Patron Saint, was born in Lod, Palestine, around 280 AD and died on April 23, 303. His father was Gerontius of Cappadocia, who was an officer in the Roman army. The legend of St. George killing a dragon that damaged a kingdom is an important mystical story that has survived to this day.

The name of St. George, who is very popular in Christianity, has been given to many holy places. One of these sacred places is the St. Georgios Church located in Yeşilhisar Başköy, formerly known as Potamia. This building, built in the name of St. Georgios because he was from Cappadocia, is defined as a monastery church in the sources. Rock-carved places have been identified around it.

The surviving interior wall paintings were documented with detailed scanning methods, scale drawings were made, and scene descriptions were made in the detailed study prepared by considering the whole with detailed research.

The building's survey, damage and intervention analysis, period analysis, restitution and restoration and landscaping projects were prepared by argos Atölye and the project process was completed.
